What is CTO-as-a-Service and who is it for?
CTO-as-a-Service is senior technology leadership on a part-time or fractional basis — ideal for startups that need CTO-level guidance but can't yet justify a full-time hire. We typically work with pre-seed to Series A companies that have an engineering team but no senior technical leader, or businesses that need a technically credible voice in board meetings and investor conversations. Engagements are typically 1–3 days per week and run for 3–12 months until an in-house CTO is hired.
How long does a consulting engagement typically take?
It depends on the scope. A focused architecture review takes 1–2 weeks. Technical due diligence for an acquisition typically takes 2 weeks. A full technology strategy engagement takes 3–4 weeks. Do you have vendor relationships that might bias your recommendations?
No — and this is non-negotiable for us. We have no reseller agreements, no referral fee arrangements, and no preferred vendor partnerships of any kind. Our consultants are compensated entirely by client engagement fees. This means when we recommend AWS over Azure, or suggest you buy instead of build, or advise against a specific vendor — it's because that's genuinely the right call for your situation. If we ever identify a potential conflict of interest, we disclose it immediately and let you decide how to proceed.
What happens if we disagree with your recommendations?
We welcome disagreement — it usually means we need to explain our reasoning more clearly, or you have context we haven't fully understood. Every recommendation in our reports includes the evidence and reasoning behind it, so disagreements can be discussed on the merits. We'd rather have a constructive debate and refine our recommendation than have you leave with advice you don't trust. Our goal is for you to understand and believe in the recommendation, not just accept it because we said so.
Can you implement what you recommend, or is this advice-only?
Both options are available. Some clients engage us purely for advice and take our recommendations to their internal team or another development partner. Others ask us to implement what we recommended — and because we already understand the situation deeply from the consulting phase, implementation starts faster and with fewer misunderstandings. 84% of our consulting clients do engage us for implementation, but there's no obligation and no pressure.
